Digital product passports

The funding guidelines identified the implementation of an adaptable digital product passport based on relevant standards and formats, including ISO 59040, PCDS and DPP, as one possible enabling technology for circular value creation.

Digital product information can support data collection, quality assurance, interoperability and cross-system traceability. It must form part of a systemic approach; a product passport alone did not establish eligibility for funding.

What it's about

Key questions

Without reliable product data, take-back, remanufacturing and recycling cannot be planned and organized predictably. Designing these passports comes down mainly to the following central questions:

1

Which data is required for material, component and product cycles?

2

How can product data be made interoperable, quality-assured and traceable across systems?

3

How can relevant standards and formats be implemented effectively while protecting intellectual property?
