DPP4Value

Digital Product Passports for the Circular Economy

A digital product passport provides structured information about a product, including its materials, origin, and condition. DPP4Value develops a practical solution that enables companies to use product data for circular strategies and make informed decisions on reuse, refurbishment, and remanufacturing.

Motivation

The Digital Product Passport (DPP) can provide transparency regarding a product's materials, condition, and origin within the circular economy.

In practice, however, manufacturing companies often lack an understanding of what data is needed and how it can be prepared in a semantic format and made available in a standardized way. A transferable approach to integrating DPP into existing production processes can thus create significant added value for companies and the circular economy.

Goals and Approach

The goal of the Eureka research project DPP4Value is to develop and test a practical DPP solution for small and medium-sized enterprises based on the standardized administrative framework (AAS). In particular, the project is developing a scalable and transferable design for industry-wide integration.

To this end, existing processes at the industrial partners are analyzed for the necessary data in order to identify and close data gaps and semantically process the data as a whole. An AI-supported analysis tool, currently under development, is intended to assist in selecting the optimal R-strategy based on product passport data. In addition, new business models such as “DPP-as-a-Service” are being explored, and training formats for people involved in circular processes are being developed. The implementation of a DPP during ongoing operations is being tested using an industrial fan as an example. The added value and costs for manufacturing companies are being evaluated using technological, economic, and environmental metrics.

Innovations and Prospects

DPP4Value is developing a scalable and field-tested approach for integrating digital product passports into existing production processes.

For the first time, this approach combines standardized data structures with concrete applications for R-strategies and operational decision-making processes. It enables small and medium-sized enterprises to meet regulatory requirements more efficiently and make informed decisions regarding the circular use of their products.
