Motivation

In the construction sector, reuse has so far focused mainly on structural components and interior fittings, while building services components, such as heating, ventilation, and electrical systems, continue to be used linearly and recycled as materials despite the considerable resources required to produce them.

Many of these components are standardized and, in principle, suitable for dismantling and reinstallation. However, uniform testing procedures, options for digital traceability, suitable interim storage facilities, and economically viable business models are currently lacking.

Objectives and Approach

The aim of the RE-LOOP-TGA research project is to develop a systematic, integrated data and logistics platform for quality-assured reuse and refurbishment of building services components and for connecting relevant stakeholders along the process chain from dismantling to reinstallation.

With the designed processes and digital tools, building services components can be systematically dismantled, tested, categorized, and digitally recorded together with life cycle and usage data.

In addition, standardized testing and quality assurance processes as well as interoperable interfaces and digital product passports are to be developed in order to create transparency and planning reliability. Logistical processes, platform functions, and business models will be tested and validated in pilot applications and workshops with relevant stakeholders. The establishment of an online marketplace will provide information on circular building services components, including the associated information models.

Innovations and Perspectives

The RE-LOOP-TGA project opens up new market opportunities for reusable building services components and strengthens SMEs in particular. Dismantling companies can recover valuable components, skilled trades can benefit from cost-efficient solutions, and building owners and municipalities gain access to resource-efficient alternatives.

In addition, the project promotes digitalization in the building sector and supports the stronger integration of circular value creation in construction.
